The primary goal for this home was occupant health. Our client has acute mold, chemical, dust and EMF sensitivities, rendering most environments unlivable. High-performance construction detailing and systems promote a clean and healthy living experience.
Expansive windows and deep roof overhangs work in tandem to connect the home to the outdoors while protecting it from the elements. The durable exterior cladding includes a standing seam metal roof, aluminum windows, shou sugi ban siding and cedar soffits. Maple flooring and birch cabinetry provide a calm, minimal backdrop for the client’s art collection. Nontoxic finishes and an energy recovery ventilation system were used for healthy indoor air while low voltage lighting control and metal clad wiring were used to reduce EMF. Tadelakt plaster shower and bath walls along with extra-large format tile minimize mold growth in moisture-prone areas. High-efficiency electric heat pump systems provide heating, cooling and hot water. The energy use of the home is offset by a large-scale solar array.
While largely a new construction home, we were able to reuse the original foundation, save the swimming pool and preserve nearly all the property’s trees. The Japanese-inspired landscape is a tranquil backdrop for this simple, aging-in-place residence.
